An IB World School in Chicago brought its Career-related Programme (CP) students to national television with a feature on “Good Morning America.” Students from Farragut Career Academy worked with Grammy nominee John Ondrasik to write a song, helping to launch a national philanthropic effort called Let Music Fill My World. This effort, fully funded by Chicago-based Tullman Family Office, is on a mission to make music education available to every student in America.

Farragut Career Academy, an IB World School within the Chicago Public Schools system, recently joined forces with the Tullman Family Office and renowned musical artist John Ondrasik from Five for Fighting. Together, they have embarked on a groundbreaking initiative aimed at granting access to music education in areas where it is most needed.

Last year, students at Farragut Career Academy wrote and recorded a song titled "Let Music Fill My World,” which subsequently secured the school up to $300,000 over three years to fund the employment of a music educator. Now, this same song is serving as a source of inspiration for others to participate in the Music Matters Challenge, aiming to obtain that same grant this year.

The challenge has evolved into a national music competition, hosted by “Let Music Fill My World,” a recently established initiative dedicated to putting music educators into underserved communities, ensuring that no child in the United States grows up without music.

Andrea F. Kulas is the IB CP Coordinator at Farragut Career Academy IB World School. She said the CP is a dynamic programme because it includes ways to engage all students in their unique interests.

“As a programme, it holds space for students to not just feel like IB students, but to be IB students in real-world situations. In this case, we do not have a music program, but we were able to take this opportunity to produce a song from start to finish. This project embraced much of IB CP core as well as functioning as an extension of the IB classroom learning through approaches to learning skills,” she said.

In April 2024, the CP students helped kick off the new grant on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”
