On 20 July, the Director General of the IB, Mr Olli-Pekka Heinonen, and the President of the National Administration of Public Education (ANEP), Mr Robert Silva, came together to sign an agreement that will introduce the IB framework to ANEP educational offerings, empowering Uruguayan educators and students to thrive and make a difference.
This milestone represents a step forward in IB’s mission to open access to an IB education to a wider cohort of students from all backgrounds.
Robert Silva, President of the National Administration of Public Education (ANEP), affirmed, "A first step is always required, and today we will start the process of implementation of the International Baccalaureate in high schools and technical schools in Uruguay. The educational transformation that Uruguay is developing coincides with the work developed by the IB and this collaboration will allow Uruguayan students to continue their education and training outside the country, either in international universities or institutions. It will be a process of dialogue and encounter.”
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aims to strengthen the commitment of the IB and ANEP towards expanding access to IB programmes in the public education system and offer professional and training development opportunities and resources, facilitate the cooperation between educational institutions offering the IB, and further areas of collaboration to increase student, educators, and teaching capacity in the region.
“It is an honour to be here today signing this Memorandum of Understanding as a kick-off for future implementation of IB programmes in the public system in Uruguay. We are excited to collaborate with ANEP as part of their education plan guiding the transformation of the educational system across the country. This contribution will lead to equipping the children of today with a full set of skills that will allow them to thrive and adapt to the challenges of a new era,” said Mr Olli-Pekka Heinonen, Director General at the IB.
