For the first time, the IB has obtained a formal, externally validated recommendation for awarding of credit for Standard Level (SL) subjects for IB students entering universities in the United States and Canada.
The IB is proud to announce that the American Council on Education (ACE) recommends that colleges and universities award at least 3 credits for IB scores of 4 or higher for all the SL subjects reviewed. This external review validates the rigour and high standards of IB qualifications.
The IB commissioned ACE to review the value of 20 course assessments, including Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and our most-subscribed SL subjects, in terms of awarding university credit. ACE is a leader and major coordinating body for U.S. higher education institutions. It shapes public policy, engages in research, and delivers programs that prioritize student access and success.
These new recommendations encourage universities to enhance their IB credit policies to recognize IB SL subjects. University credit reduces costs for families and allows students the opportunity to explore additional courses aligned to their goals and passions.
The IB is committed to maintaining its collaboration with universities and the whole IB community to advocate for more equitable and inclusive university policies that recognize a larger number of qualified IB students, in line with the new ACE recommendations.
