John Cho, DP Coordinator, Rivercrest Christian College, Melbourne, Australia.
At Rivercrest Christian College (RCC), the IB Festival of Learning was more than an event; it was a powerful celebration of student growth, inquiry, and community. By bringing together the culminating experiences of the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Diploma Programme (DP), RCC showcased the whole arc of IB learning in one unified and inspiring occasion.
A showcase of continuum learning
The festival featured the Year 5 PYP Exhibition, Year 10 MYP Personal Project, and the DP Core (extended essay, theory of knowledge (TOK), and CAS). These experiences highlighted the skills, attributes, and values developed throughout each programme. The event illustrated what it means to be an IB Continuum School—where learning is deep, diverse, and purpose-driven.

Inquiry and growth across programmes
Each programme’s showcase reflected the unique journey of its students:
- PYP students explored real-world issues through conceptual inquiry, often framed by a Christian worldview, and even introduced their learning with an original song.
- MYP students presented independent projects rooted in personal interests and rigorous research, spanning topics from technology to the arts.
- DP students reflected on how the Core shaped them as learners and individuals, demonstrating a shift from knowledge to wisdom.
Student voice and ownership
From the opening ceremony to the exhibitions, student agency was front and centre. Learners articulated their goals, shared their processes, and explained the impact of their inquiries on themselves and their communities. The event empowered students to take ownership of their learning and celebrate it with pride.

Community engagement and connection
The festival welcomed families, staff, and external education stakeholders, including representatives from other schools in Victoria. This inclusive approach strengthened campus relationships and created aspirational opportunities for younger students and their families. MYP students who had mentored PYP learners were especially proud to see their mentees shine.
Elevating the DP core
Often seen as peripheral, the DP Core was given its rightful spotlight. Senior students’ reflections revealed their rigour and transformative power, helping shift perceptions and elevate their status within the community.

The importance of celebrating
Celebrating learning across the IB continuum in a unified event is a powerful way to:
- Showcase the progression of inquiry and growth.
- Strengthen relationships within and beyond the school.
- Inspire students and families with a clear vision of the IB journey.
Whether you offer one programme or all three, consider partnering with other IB schools to create a shared celebration. It’s a meaningful way to affirm the value of IB education and build a connected, aspirational learning community.
