The International Baccalaureate (IB) was proud to host IB Day California, a gathering showcasing how IB programmes are shaping education across the Golden State and preparing students to lead in an interconnected, rapidly changing world.

Held at the Orange County Department of Education, the event brought together educators, students, and school leaders to share their experiences and best practices. Participants explored how the IB’s four programmes develop globally minded learners, equipping them with the skills and mindset needed for higher education, careers, and life beyond the classroom.

Robert Kelty, IB’s Head of Country for the United States and Canada, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing how IB schools nurture creativity, empathy, and critical thinking.

“Our goal is to develop students who are academically capable and empowered to enact positive change,” Kelty said. “Through IB programmes, students learn to see beyond borders, respect diverse perspectives, and work effectively in international contexts.”

Under the theme “Learning Without Limits,” participants engaged in interactive breakout sessions, where educators from IB World Schools nationwide shared innovative strategies to expand access and deepen the impact of IB programmes.

Workshops explored topics ranging from bridging Diploma Programme (DP) and Career-related Programme (CP) pathways to empowering students to take ownership of their learning in the Primary Years Programme (PYP). A student panel also brought fresh perspectives, with middle and high school students sharing how IB programmes have sparked their passions for global issues and community engagement.

A highlight of the event included school visits where participants saw the IB in action, meeting students, observing classrooms, and witnessing how inquiry-based learning and cross-disciplinary projects inspire curiosity and creativity.

Among the participating schools was St. Mary’s School in Aliso Viejo, which provided a lively backdrop for educators to share how the IB philosophy comes to life on campus and empowers students to collaborate effectively and think independently.

“In an IB school, teachers can bring all this creativity and warmth to deliver the curriculum in a different way, incorporating a global perspective,” said Leila Volkmann, Grade 7 Biology and Environmental Science Teacher.

“Our goal is empowering kids to take ownership of what they’re learning,” added Tom Spence, Head of Lower School. “The IB’s inquiry process allows us to equip students with new skills and opportunities they are really excited about.”

Throughout these events, participants reflected on the IB’s approach to teaching and learning, which centres on inquiry, reflection, and international-mindedness. This helps students develop the communication, collaboration, and leadership skills essential for the future.

The IB has been present in California since 1978, with 235 IB World Schools now operating across the state. IB Day California championed its leading role in advancing globally focused education, and reaffirmed the IB’s commitment to empowering students to build a more peaceful and sustainable world.
