Open letter on the Middle East conflict

The violence in the Middle East has profoundly shocked and saddened the entire IB community. The temporary cessation of the conflict offered a moment of fragile hope, but the days ahead remain uncertain.

Many of you have reached out with questions about how we are addressing our communities’ needs in the Middle East and beyond, and I wanted to take the opportunity to share that we have been focused on our people, offering support and help to our school communities, teachers, students and alumni, where needed. This crisis impacts many of us, directly and indirectly, and our thoughts are with all those who are suffering.

‌Our mission reminds us that education is our most powerful tool. Fundamentally, we value thoughtful intercultural respect, and we believe that open and unprejudiced reflection provides the best opportunity to navigate complex and uncertain times. Supporting young people as they become courageous and compassionate critical thinkers is not easy in these times, but it is vital. Together, we are developing young people who could, one day, be instrumental in creating flourishing and peaceful communities.

‌Staying focused on our mission enables our global community to stay resilient in challenging times. This is a moment for mutual empathy, a time for caring, and for helping those around us who are suffering. The emotional toll of the last few weeks is undeniable.

‌For our global community, our Assessment and Learning and Teaching experts continue to collate a variety of resources for you to use in your classrooms and living rooms. These materials will help support well-being and provide opportunities for safe dialogues. The resources will continuously be updated.

‌We are grateful to those of you who have shared your thoughts, feelings and experiences with us. We are listening, and we stand with you. Look after yourselves, and each other.
