Taipei Municipal Binjiang Experimental Junior High School has been authorized to offer the Middle Years Programme (MYP). Located in Tapei City, Taiwan, the school is the first public school in Taiwan to offer the MYP.
Ms Li Su Chen, Head of School, Taipei Municipal Binjiang Experimental Junior High School, said: "The vision of the 12-Year Basic Education Curriculum and the IB both aims to nurture lifelong learners. Through intensive IB professional development (IB PD) training, our teachers have gained a deeper understanding of the IB philosophy and mission statement. The IB curriculum provides a framework that aligns with the literacy-oriented goals emphasized in the 12-Year Basic Education Curriculum, with the vision that our students will become well-rounded lifelong learners. Through changes in ATT (Approaches to Teaching) and ATL (Approaches to Learning), we expect students to develop the 10 IB learner profiles during the three years of experimental education."
To celebrate this milestone, the Taipei Department of Education (DOE) held the event 'Ceremony for the Release of Taipei City’s International Education White Paper and the Launch of Taiwan’s First MYP World School' at Taipei Municipal Binjiang Junior High School on Wednesday, 27 July 2022. The Mayor of Taipei City, Ko Wen-Je and the Commissioner, Department of Education, Taipei City Government, Tseng Tsan-Chin joined the ceremony among other international and local education officials and experts, sharing their experiences and insights on international education.
"Taipei Municipal Xisong High School was authorized to implement the IBDP education in 2021 and is also the first public IB World School in Taiwan. Taipei Municipal Binjiang Experimental Junior High School, authorized in 2022, is the first public school in Taiwan to offer the MYP. They made history. It is our hope that through the IB education, we can better promote intercultural understanding on campus, boost collaboration among teachers’ communities, and equip students with the agility to cope with the ever-changing world. Taipei City Government will continue to work with the IB in helping educators better understand the values of the IB educational philosophy by running more workshops and seminars. We hope Taipei City will turn into a hub city of IB World Schools", commented the Taipei Department of Education.
The MYP is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world, preparing them for success in further study and life. The MYP aims to develop active learners and internationally-minded young people who can empathize with others and pursue lives of purpose and meaning. Designed with the whole child in mind, the curriculum balances the cognitive, social and emotional aspects of learning so that students develop personal understanding, an emerging sense of self, and responsibility in their community. The programme empowers students to inquire into a wide range of issues and ideas of significance locally, nationally and globally. The result is young people who are creative, critical and reflective thinkers.
