Beijing-kids.com turned to Anna Sophie Loewenberg, IB Language and Literature Teacher at Beijing No. 55 High School, to answer a frequently asked question from parents: What is the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP)? How does it differ from other high school diplomas?

Anna Sophie introduces the IB Diploma Programme (DP) as a “rigorous pre-university course study” that encourages the development of abilities such as being compassionate, knowledgeable or inquiring. She suggests that the programme is more rigorous and holistic than other international programmes such as the Advanced Placement (AP), and explains that students are required to study two languages, a humanities or social science subject, an experimental science subject, mathematics and a creative arts subject. However within these subjects they are able to choose from a wide variety of courses.

“Unique to the DP, it is this comprehensive range of subjects and experiences that makes it a demanding course of study designed to prepare students effectively for university entrance,” states Anna Sophie.

One of her most memorable moments as a DP literature teacher was when she witnessed a discussion between students from different backgrounds discovering a common ground through their study of Franz Kafka.

Sophie concludes: “Overall, the DP offers a holistic approach to academic study, and I believe this approach allows students to flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally, as well as ethically.”
