The Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa in Kenya is breaking new ground by pioneering the first ever Swahili - English version of the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP).

The initiative is driven by the Academy’s vision to offer world class education that spans both global and local expertise, and has been developed in collaboration with the IB.

As PYP students at the Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa progress through their schooling, they will proceed into the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), and later the IB Diploma Programme (DP), giving them the opportunity to complete an English-Swahili bilingual IB diploma. Swahili is one of the most widely spoken languages of the region, and a bilingual programme gives future entrepreneurs at the Academy an advantage in playing leadership roles on the continent.

“When His Highness started the Aga Khan Academy network of schools, he had the vision of educating future leaders, who would later be able to drive positive development in their societies and this would only be possible if the children had a powerful grasp of their local language, which in this case is Swahili,” said Esther Kariuki, a teacher of the dual language programme.
