In Spring 2022, the IB conducted a trial to compare different approaches to IB grade award (also known as grade boundary setting or standard setting). The study explored whether access to statistical evidence on exams influenced examiners’ grading decisions, by comparing grade awards when examiners reviewed statistical evidence prior to grading, with grade awards when they did not. Preliminary findings suggest that both approaches lead to broadly comparable grading outcomes. It also raised questions about the purpose and uses of different types of statistical evidence in IB grade award.
