“Developing the citizens of tomorrow capable of the kind of collaboration and thinking we will need if climate catastrophe is to be averted is, at least in part, the responsibility of today’s schools, teachers, and educators,” Olli-Pekka Heinonen, Director General of the International Baccalaureate.
Sustainability is a key focus at the IB Global Conference and Heads World Conference. We recognize the urgency of addressing the climate crisis and are actively taking steps to reduce our environmental impact. Here's how we're incorporating sustainable practices at the conference:
Green conference venue
Our commitment to sustainability begins with the venue itself. The Convention Centre Dublin (CCD) is renowned for its eco-friendly practices. It is the world’s first carbon-neutral constructed convention centre and is one of Europe’s most environmentally friendly venues. The CCD is also working towards their net zero carbon ambition by 2025. Read more about their journey here.
Green transportation
Throughout the conference, we encourage attendees to walk or utilize Dublin's excellent public transportation system where possible. The CCD is a 10-minute walk from the city centre and the official conference hotels are conveniently located within walking distance of the conference venue. The public transportation system comprising The Luas, Dublin Bus and the Dart all run regularly to link up the city. Use this tool to plan your journey. Alternatively, Dublin Bikes provides the option to cycle around the city; there are multiple stations across the city to pick up or drop off a bicycle.
Sustainable food
All food served at The CCD is sourced from Ireland, eliminating air freight since 2021. During the conference, we will offer plant-based menu options with a lower carbon footprint which helps reduce water usage and deforestation. We try to reduce waste where possible by minimizing the use of single-use plastics and offering recyclable food containers and cutlery.
Waste reduction
To minimize waste generation, we are providing attendees with reusable items, such as a water bottle/coffee mug and encouraging the use of digital materials instead of printed ones. We also aim to reduce food waste by donating surplus food to a local charity.
Sustainable printing and production
We collaborate with vendors to use recyclable or salvaged materials for banners and signage. Giveaway items in IB welcome bags are made with recyclable materials. Attendees are encouraged to recycle lanyards at designated boxes.
Community engagement
Beyond the conference, we believe in giving back to the local community. We will collaborate with local organizations to ensure that resources, including food and stationery, are donated to those in need. We strive to make a meaningful and lasting impact on the communities we touch.
Education and awareness
Education plays a crucial role in sustainability, and this is closely tied to our conference theme, "Education for an Inclusive future". An inclusive education that considers diverse perspectives and encourages critical thinking can empower individuals to become responsible stewards of the environment, taking actions to address environmental challenges and create a sustainable future.
Look out for the sustainability posters at the conference venue. Consider attending the breakout session, “Sustainability: A key to unlocking curriculum development”, and join your fellow educators in a dialogue on sustainable practices.
Do your part!
We invite all conference attendees to do their part in embracing sustainability. We encourage you to:
- Bring your own reusable water bottle/coffee mug or use the one provided in your delegate bag! You will be able to refill your water bottle at water stations provided around the conference venue.
- Avoid food waste by taking only what you can consume.
- Reduce paper waste where possible. Check the conference programme on the mobile app instead of printing out the programme.
- Walk or take public transportation to and from the conference venue.
- Follow the waste segregation guidelines provided by the conference venue and make sure to dispose of your waste properly in designated recycling bins.
Small actions collectively make a big impact. Together, we can create a more sustainable future and inspire others to do the same!
