Country Profiles
The Americas region includes over 30 countries and territories representing over 1,600 IB World Schools.
The following country profiles provide a historical overview of the growth of the IB in each country along with school profiles, recognition of student and school achievement and government and university recognition of IB programmes.

Argentina IB Profile
The first IB Diploma Programme (DP) was authorized in 1973 at St. Catherine’s Moorlands School, a private school in Buenos Aires. More than a decade later, in 1984, two more schools began implementing the DP, and by 1990 there were 15 IB World Schools in Argentina. The number of IB programmes more than doubled over the next decade, with a period of accelerated growth occurring between 1998 and 2000. The DP and PYP have continued to grow moderately since then.

Brazil IB Profile
The first IB Diploma Programme (DP) was authorized in 1980 at Escola María Imaculada (Chapel School), a private school in Sao Paulo. IB World Schools have grown at a sustained average pace of four per decade since then, reaching 5 by 1990, 9 by 2000, and 13 by 2008.
In 2002, the first Primary Years Programmes (PYP) were authorized at Saint Nicholas School, in Sao Paulo, and Centro Internacional de Educacao Integrada, in Rio de Janeiro. Since then, IB programmes have grown at a faster rate, primarily due to the adoption of the PYP at four more schools. The first, and only, Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Brazil was authorized in 2008 at St. Francis College in Sao Paulo.

Canada IB Profile
The first IB Diploma Programme was authorized in 1974 at Lester B. Pearson Collegiate United World College of the Pacific, a private school in Victoria, British Columbia. In 1979,
Sir Winston Churchill High School in Alberta and Mountain Secondary School in British
Columbia became the first public
schools to implement the DP. By 1989
there were 32 IB World Schools, the
majority of them public.

The Caribbean IB Profile
The first IB Diploma Programme was authorized in 1995 at Saint George School, a private school in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The second IB DP followed in 1996 at the International School of Curacao, in the Netherlands Antilles.
There was no further growth until 2000, but the number of schools across the Caribbean has increased significantly since then. Indeed, the total number of programmes has more than doubled over the past four years.

Chile IB Profile
The first IB Diploma Programmes (DP) were authorized in 1981 at Colegio La Maisonette and Santiago College, both private schools in Santiago. The IB expanded its presence considerably in the decade between 1981 and 1991, with 8 more schools adopting the DP. The IB has grown at a steady pace since then: 7 more programmes were implemented between 1992 and 2002, and 8 more over the past 6 years.

Colombia IB profile
The first IB Diploma Programme was authorized in 1977 at Colegio Colombo Británico, a private school in Cali. Over the next decade, eight more schools adopted the Diploma, six of them in Bogotá. Since 1998, the growth of IB programmes in Colombia has steadily gained momentum. Six new programmes began operating in 2008 alone, the largest number ever to have been authorized in a single year.

Costa Rica IB Profile
The first IB Diploma Programme was authorized in 1991 at the British School of Costa Rica, a private school in San José. In 1995, the Lincoln School began implementing the IB Diploma, and in 1997, the European School followed suit. Over the past decade, four more IB World Schools have been authorized.
Currently, there are no IB Middle Years Programmes (MYP) or Primary Years Programmes (PYP) operating in Costa Rica.

Ecuador IB Profile
The first IB Diploma Programme (DP) was authorized in 1981 at Academia Cotopaxi American International School, a private school in Quito. Over the next 16 years, the IB expanded slowly, with 7 more private schools adopting the Diploma in Quito and Guayaquil.
In the decade between 1998 and 2007,
IB programmes in Ecuador doubled,
reaching 17. During this period, the first
Middle Years Programme (MYP) was
authorized at the Colegio Americano
de Quito (in 2001), and the first and only Primary Years Programme (PYP) in the country
was introduced at Academia Cotopaxi (in 2005).

Mexico IB Profile
The first IB Diploma Programme
was authorized in 1980 at Instituto
Educativo Olinca, a private school in
Mexico City.
Over the next two decades, sixteen
more schools adopted the Diploma
Programme. In 2000, Instituto
Educativo Olinca and the Colegio
Ciudad de México, both in Mexico City, were the first in the country to authorize the Middle Years Programme (MYP). In the same
year, the first Primary Years Programme (PYP) began operating at the Colegio Ciudad de
México and The Churchill School.

Peru IB Profile
The first IB Diploma Programme was authorized in 1987 at Williamson Newton College, a private school in Lima. Over the next decade, 8 more schools adopted the Diploma, all of them located in Lima. Since 2002, the number of IB programmes has doubled, with the largest spurt of growth occurring over the past two years.
The first IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) was authorized in 2000 at Davy College in Cajamarca, and it has grown at a steady rate since then. In 2003, Williamson Newton College was the first school in the country to introduce the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP).

United States IB Profile
The first IB Diploma Programme was authorized in 1971 at the United Nations International School, a private school in New York. In 1978, Jerome I. Case International School, Rufus King High School and Wausau East High School, all in Wisconsin, became the first public schools to implement the DP, together with Withrow International High School in Ohio.
The first IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) was authorized in 1998 at the Dwight School, a private school in New York, followed in 1999 by the public Academy International Elementary school in Colorado.
Over the past five years, the total number of IB programmes in the US has doubled. The MYP and PYP have expanded exponentially since 2005, and the DP has also continued growing at a fast pace.

Uruguay IB Profile
The first IB Diploma Programme was authorized in 1971 at British Schools, a private school in Montevideo. In 1992 and 1999, two more schools adopted the Diploma: the Escuela Integral Hebreo Uruguaya and St. Patrick’s College, both in Montevideo. Over the past decade, four more IB World Schools have been authorized.
The first IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) was authorized in 1999 at St. Patrick’s College in Montevideo, followed by two more in 2004. In 2004, St. Brendan’s School was the first school in the country to introduce the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), and remains the only one implementing this programme.

Venezuela IB Profile
The first IB Diploma Programme was authorized in 1983 at the Colegio Internacional de Caracas, a private school in the capital. Between 1992 and 1999, four more schools adopted the Diploma, in Caracas, Valencia and Maracaibo. Over the past decade, four more IB World Schools have been authorized.
The first IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) was authorized in 2002 at the Colegio Internacional de Caracas.
In 2006, the Instituto Educacional Juan XXIII was the first school in the country to introduce the IB Primary Years Programme, and the second to implement the MYP, in 2009. The only other school implementing the PYP, since 2009, is the Centro de Educación Valle Abierto.
