Projects

Our Teacher Training Projects

The recent August 2008 workshop in Banda Aceh on “Music and Arts” was delivered by Tria Sismalinda from Sekolah Global Jaya, Virna Angela from Sekolah Global Indo-Asia Batam and Leong Dee Yinn from International School of Penang.

We have reached the final workshop for Moratuwa (Sri Lanka) which was recently conducted from 4 to 8 August 2008 and was delivered by Dana Bohnenkamp from Rockrimmon Elementary School and DJ Leonardia from Beacon International School.

There are two more workshops scheduled for Hambantota before the main graduation ceremony which will be held for in December 2008 for both Moratuwa and Hambantota participants.

We truly appreciate the support and continued goodwill that is the life of our program. Should you have any interest in contributing to this part of the IB, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Partnership Projects

The Projects department at IBAP will be phasing out its direct involvement in school partnership projects in order to place more emphasis on what we have the most experience in, i.e. teacher training. With that, we continue to encourage schools to carry on the meaningful connections that were already established since the project started. We thank all schools that have been involved and wish everyone the best of luck.

IB Classifieds Project

We are looking for projects to be advertised on the upcoming IB website classifieds section. The IB Classifieds section will be a site visited by members of the IB community. The site is currently in the making and will have a beta phase starting October 2008 at the IB Regional Conference in Beijing. Projects placed on this site will be seen by many interested in contributing to meaningful projects and would be a collaboration in which we have you offer volunteer opportunities. This would be a perfect opportunity for you to advertise your projects on our site!  We look forward to hearing from you.

Cambodia

This quarter has continued to be a very busy and productive time for the five Project schools and local staff even though August and September are summer holiday months in Cambodia.

-  In June, we were notified that we had received a funding grant from UNESCO in the amount of USD14,000. This is the third time that UNESCO has provided funding for our Project. This money will be used to offset local project staff salaries and for workshop training materials and resources. Many thanks to Ian Hill, IBO Deputy Director General, for his assistance with our funding proposal.

- On 12 July, Helen Page-Wood from Ivanhoe Grammar School, Melbourne, brought three teachers and 12 students to the Project schools and taught English and games to grade 5/6 students at Prek Tapov and Krapeuha. They also donated USD500.00 to each school to purchase books and teaching materials for their Libraries.

-  From 8-14 July, Stephanie Bush from Queenwood School for Girls, Sydney, taught demonstration lessons on Literacy integrated into arts, maths and other subjects. She taught a total of ten classes at the four schools with each class being observed by four student teachers. After each lesson she debriefed the student teachers and left all teaching resources with the mentor teachers for continued use.

-  In August, Queenwood School for Girls, Sydney, donated a further USD10,000 to the Project. This money has been designated to renovate/build one state-of-the-art toilet block in each of the five schools. Any funds remaining will be redirected to the classroom renovation programme.

-  Two retired Canadian teachers, Betsy Ramsay and Ted Currie, visited the Project last January during a holiday in Asia. They were so impressed with the work being done that they decided to raise money on their return to Canada to fund toilet renovations and dormitory improvements for the student teachers. They started a “Toonies for Toilets” campaign ( a “Toonie” is a $2 CAD coin) in their hometown of Orillia, Ontario, and raised over CAD3000!

-  September brings a month of four week long teacher training workshops for our 130 Mentor Teachers and 30 Teacher Training College Teachers. Annie Auckland, Project Lead Teacher, has developed a series of workshops that will focus on mapping skills and sharing of professional resources. We are very fortunate this year to have IBAP teachers who are volunteering their time and at their own expense to assist with some of these workshops. David Meakin from Singapore will  join us the first week to share his expertise in mapping skills and social studies. Lynne Ord and Dayle Van Zenten from Ivanhoe Grammar will join us the third week to share their expertise in the same areas.

This is only a snapshot of what has transpired in a short period of time. All of our five IBAP Partner Schools are actively involved in supporting the Project in a wide variety of ways. During the upcoming year these will be reported in this Newsletter in full.
