University Recognition
With over 4800 students registered in our May session schools
as full diploma candidates for the May 2008 session, it is critical
that university recognition strategies are in place around the
world to recognize the achievements of our students. Last May,
students from the Asia Pacific applied to over 700 different
tertiary institutions around the world. Perhaps most surprising
was the fact that 71% of the requests for university transcripts
were for institutions outside of our region. The US, Canada, and
the United Kingdom, make up the top destination choices for the
vast majority of our May session students.
Having said that, last May we received over 1300 requests
transcripts to be sent to 180 institutions in 13 countries within
the Asia Pacific Region, often in countries and universities where
little or no formal recognition exists. Additionally, over 600
requests were made from students outside of the Asia Pacific
region who wished to pursue tertiary education in our region –
especially in Japan and Australia.
As a result, it is clear that the Asia/Pacific office needs to make
university recognition a key priority, ensuring that students
receive the appropriate recognition of their diplomas wherever
they choose to attend post-secondary studies. Coordinators
should continue to encourage parents and students to keep up
to date with the university section on the IB public website.
Coordinators who need specific information on universities not
listed on the public website should contact the IB Asia Pacific
office.
