Quarter Two, 2008

Message from the Regional Director

Message from the Regional Director

Greetings to you all with our second quarter enewsletter edition for 2008. We wish all the May session schools candidates the

success they deserve with the Diploma examinations and a happy, relaxing and safe summer break.  This is a particularly poignant admonishment as over the last few weeks we have watched the challenges faced by the group of IB Diploma students from Guangya School in Sichuan province in China.

We commend the Head, Coordinator and staff for their calm and balanced perspectives in addressing the needs of the students at this time and our thoughts are with the wider school community as many face the challenges of rebuilding their school, and their homes.

Regional Conference :  Beijing (17-20 October, 2007)

Theme : “Educating for Social Responsibility”

Registrations are open and coming in quickly. We encourage schools to register during the early bird registration phase i.e. prior to 1 August. We had a fantastic response to the Call for Papers – so this promises to be an exciting programme.

Regional Council

The newly constituted Regional Council met in Singapore on 2

and 3 May 2008. A warm welcome to the two new members of

the Council, David Walker, Managing Director Macquarie Capital

Advisers, is a businessman based in Singapore. David has also

taken on the role of Trustee for IB operations in Singapore.

Richard Henry is the Head of Sekolah Global Jaya in Jakarta.

Both new members bring perspectives from very different

backgrounds and experiences to the group. Discussions focused

on The Access Agenda from the Board, Fundraising, Fees

Setting, setting priorities and strategies for University

Recognition and providing feedback to the Programme

Recognition Agenda.

Increase in fees

Much information was published in October 2006 regarding Fee

increases for PYP and MYP that came into effect last September.

Regionally we have also undertaken an ongoing service costing

exercise with respect to Authorisation Fees. The outcome of this

will be a more realistic charge particularly for Application Part A fees for the Diploma which we are now also bringing in line with Part A fees for MYP and PYP programmes.   Application PART A fees are inclusive of: Advice and guidance in relation to implementation of the programme, subscription to the OCC, Arrangement of the pre-authorization visit, staff time on the pre-authorization visit itself and preparation and submission of the pre-authorization report, Coordinator notes and programme development and updates, access to in-school training and consultation. The regional fees schedule for 2008/09 is available here.
