Japan and Korea

PYP Community Induction

Mr and Mrs Komaki, the founding directors of K. International School Tokyo, shown below hosted the PYP Community Induction at their school on 9 and 10 February.  K. International School Tokyo is one of the two all three-IB Programme schools in Japan.

Sasha Marshall, Principal of K. International School introduced Julian Weeks who led the PYP induction and welcomed the twenty-seven participants who came from such authorized PYP schools as Osaka International School, European School Kobe, K. International School Tokyo, Tokyo International School and Yokohama International School, as well as from candidate and interested schools such as Canadian International School, LCA International School and Tamagawa Gakuen.

PYP Network Group

Herr Alf Mueller, Head of European School Kobe and Alex Inman, Deputy Head and PYP Coordinator kindly hosted the PYP East Asia Network Group meeting on Monday 12 March.  Terry Tiplady chaired the meeting which covered such a wide range of topics as transdisciplinary themes, key concepts, central ideas, reflection, teacher questions, planner, assessment, learner profile, workshop needs, workshop certificates and future network meeting topics and timing.

Ms Ikroop Sandhu gave a presentation on “Global Learning Exchange” that she is pursuing with her Grade 1 students at European School Kobe together with Grade 1 students attending Ecole Mondiale World School in Mumbai.

Best wishes to Terry who is leaving this sub-region and thank you for your contribution to the PYP East Asia Network Group.

MYP Network Group

Ms Karin Caffin, Head of Osaka International School, Gwyn Underwood, High School Principal and Chair of the MYP East Asia Network Group and Kazuhisa Hara, Co-Chair of the MYP East Asia Network Group kindly hosted the MYP network meeting at Osaka International School on Tuesday 13 March. Those who attended the meeting found the meeting very informative and constructive.  Furthermore, Simon Mills of Osaka International School gave a presentation on how to use “EasyGrade Pro” software. The eight schools represented in the network meeting included two authorized MYP schools namely, K. International School and Osaka International School together with such candidate and interested schools as Tokyo International School, Tamagawa Gakuen, Hiroo Gakuen, AICJ Junior High School and Tokyo Gakugei University International Secondary School. 

On behalf of the Association of the IB Schools in Japan and Korea, I would like to express my special congratulations to Ms. Karin Caffin, Head of Osaka International School, for her recent nomination onto the IBO Council of Foundation.

Upcoming events

-  The Diploma Coordinators of the Association of IB Schools in Japan and Korea will hold its May meeting at Osaka International School on 4 June.

-  Tamagawa University Research Institute will host the second IB Symposium on Saturday 17 November.

-  Tokyo International School will host MYP Community Induction from 30 November to 2 December.

-  Yokohama International School will host IBAP PYP regional workshops from 30 November to 2 December.

A newly authorised school

Congratulations to Mr Michael Saffarewich, Head of school, and Mr James Hatch, DP Coordinator, and their school community at Fukuoka International School. Stuart Jones, Diploma Coordinator at International School Singapore and Kyoko Bernard pursued an authorization visit from 28 February to 2 March.  Michael received a letter of authorization dated 10 April to teach the Diploma Programme in the new academic year starting in August 2007.  Fukuoka International School is the first IB school in the Kyushu region.
