IB Asia Pacific Newsletter

Quarter Two, 2007

Message from the Regional Director

Many of you are coming to the end of another academic year. We wish all the May session schools success with the Diploma examinations and a happy, relaxing and safe summer break. The entire IB Asia Pacific staff would again like to thank the many schools which have again supported our work this year, by hosting workshops, and/or releasing workshop leaders, committee members and authorisation team members or by joining schools to schools and responding to the call for volunteers.

Strategic Planning in the Regional Office

Andrew Bollington, Strategic Planning Director facilitated our mid March all staff meeting as we collectively came to terms with where Asia Pacific expects to be and wants to be in 2020.

First Visit to Singapore  by Finance Director, Daniel Benham

RAC/RHRC Meetings

The RHRC and RAC groups met  in Singapore on 2 and 3 March. Both groups explored the current structure of governance and management advice with the assistance of Dr Berit Lakey, a consultant from Board Source in the US. This is part of a global review. We were pleased to have two new members join the RAC, Dr Jan Keightley who is the CEO of Senior Secondary Assessment Board of South Australia brings to the table useful insights into educational developments and the assessment landscape in Australia. Mr Eddy Henry, Programs and Alumni Affairs Director from the Sampoerna Foundation has had considerable involvement with our Schools to Schools programme in Indonesia. As an IB Diploma graduate, Eddy has also been very supportive of initiatives to improve  University Recognition in Indonesia.

Our very sincere thanks to Mr Ian Spence and Dr Indu Shahani for their tremendous support for this group over the last six years. Dr Shahani will continue her close association with the IB as vice-president of the Council of Foundation and through the Indian Development Council.

Fees increases

Much information was published last October regarding Fee increases for PYP and MYP that come into effect from September. Regionally we are in the process of completing a service costing exercise with respect to Authorisation Fees. The outcome of this will be a more realistic charge particularly for part B application fees to cover the administrative costs associated with the reviewing of the application and supporting documentation, arranging the authorization visit, staff time on the authorisation visit itself, preparation and submission of the authorization report and processing of the report by both the Regional Office and Headquarters.

Workshops

A draft 2008 workshop calendar will be released by the fourth week of May. The more comprehensive version firming of dates and venues will be available at the end of the month. One of the huge advantages of growth in the region is that we are moving towards economies of scale for workshop provision and can start cycling more of the key workshop options annually in each sub-region. We will offer 18-20% more workshop places in 2008.

In Asia Pacific, over the years, we have really endeavoured to keep workshop costs as low as possible. However we are facing significantly increasing administrative and logistical costs. Administrative pressure on our events team is not just a consequence of increased volume but is due to the practice of many schools and coordinators who register one name, then alter or swop names, change workshops, and email the office with all these requests. Collectively these practices are creating a significant workload for our events staff.

In January this year, the IB implemented a 10% rise in workshop leader honorariums globally– the first rise for some years. Apart from the effects of a falling USD, Hotel costs and airfares in the region have also shown an average 11% growth in the last eighteen months.  Thus we are also being forced to review our workshop costings again this year as we seek to address some of these rising administrative costs and aim to utilise a larger number of independent venues. These changes will be effective from 1 January 2008.

Conferences

Registrations will open for the 2007 22nd IB Asia Pacific Annual Regional Conference in Singapore from 5 October this week. The IBAP Regional Conference this year will focus on an aspect of this theme : “Educating for Environmental Sustainability”  Appreciating the irony of running a Conference on this theme, registration details will include advice and advocacy for participants who wish to offset their travel and contribute to making this a carbon neutral event.

Because of the Heads Conference rotation this year,  the IBAP Regional Conference will predominantly target Coordinators and Divisional Principals although Heads are welcome and the programme will accommodate Heads job-alike sessions. The World Heads conference is advertised on the public website.

eMail Protocol

The increasing volume of incoming email is an ongoing challenge for us. Please can we respectfully request that if an email is sent to one generic email point that it is not cc-ed to multiple other generic or specific emails. This wastes four or five people's time opening emails that one person could have made a decision about and/or forwarded to the appropriate respondent. We also get a lot of emails from yahoo or hotmail accounts – please can correspondents note their school name and code on such emails as it is not always possible to know where you are from.

We invite schools to provide articles to the third quarter 2007 IBAP Newsletter with the latest happenings at your school or if there are any special events, please email ibap@ibo.org by latest 20 August 2007.

Our best wishes to you all.

Most of you will be aware that at the end of April, the IB launched the new brand – all authorised schools should have received a package to assist you with making the necessary changes to websites and marketing materials. Please note that there are three major versions of the IB logo, all sharing a common design, each with several variants for use in different languages, designs, etc.

- The IB globe logo is reserved for use on official organization material.

- The “IB World School” logo is reserved for use by authorized schools.

- The "In cooperation with" logo is reserved for use by other organizations officially collaborating with the IB.

Schools can get a copy of the new IB World school logo here.

Interested and candidate schools are not permitted to use IB logos at all.
