IB Asia Pacific Newsletter

Quarter One, 2007

Message from the Regional Director

Greetings to all schools in the Asia Pacific region from Singapore as we prepare to usher in the year of the pig. Our best wishes also to all schools mostly in the Australasian sub region as they start the 2007 school year.

Authorisation Capacity Planning

As demand for IB programmes continues to grow the organisation is working on a number of capacity planning initiatives. Wendy Xerri (ICT Director) and Mandy Garrett (Business Systems Analyst) spent a week in mid January working with programmes staff in the Singapore office developing further improved tools for tracking schools from the interested schools phase, post authorisation and evaluation.

Case Studies

Since last August, case studies of different types of IB World School have been featured on our public website. Schools have found this to be an interesting insight into the diverse nature of schools that deliver IB programmes.  All nine (two from this region) are available in all three languages:

http://www.ibo.org/school/casestudy/

Our central communications department would welcome any school interested in being featured on our website to contact them directly: communications@ibo.org

Use of IB models

In the past year, the IB has formed an Intellectual Property Committee and issues of branding and organisational identity are part of that agenda. Following recent MYP evaluation visits in the region, we are attempting to be more definitive about the unacceptability of modified versions of the MYP model across all the schools concerned and clarify the IB position on the use of our models. The IB Policy and Rules for Use of IB Intellectual Property is actually clear about the use of the graphic of the programme model (which is copyright but not registered as a trademark). It says that authorized and candidate schools can:

Use the relevant programme model, unchanged, for the programme, a school is authorised to offer, in black and white or in colour on request from copyright@ibo.org/ Any reproduction of any of the IB’s programmes models should be labelled, e.g. ©IBO2002

Therefore our position in working with schools is that the visible symbols of the IB programmes i.e. the models and the key language that has been defined to describe aspects of our programmes e.g. the PYP glossary of terms, the IB definitions of the areas of interaction, are standard components of IB programmes and these should be represented unchanged.

Conferences

Information Literacy across the IB Programmes

Early Bird Registration has been EXTENDED for the second Annual Teachers Convention to be held on 31 March – 2 April in Singapore.

Registration is now open online for the IB Heads Conference on http://www.ibo.org/heads/conference2007/index.cfm The theme of the conference, which builds upon the achievements of the previous HSA Conference in Bangkok in 2005, is

‘Beacons of creativity, humanity & learning.

This conference is organised by the IHRC and held biannually. This year it is hosted by IB North America and will be held in San Francisco in mid October, the weekend after the IB Asia-Pacific Regional Conference. The IB Asia-Pacific Regional Conference this year will focus on the theme of “Sharing our humanity –  Environment and Sustainability” Because of the Heads Conference rotation, the IB Asia-Pacific Regional Conference will predominantly target Coordinators and Divisional Principals although Heads are welcome.

We invite schools to provide articles to the second quarter 2007

IB Asia-Pacific Newsletter with the latest happenings at your school or if

there any any special events, please email ibap@ibo.org by latest 1 May 2007. Upcoming meetings that will be reported in the next enewsletter include the Indian Development Council, which is meeting on the weekend of 10 February, and the RHRC and RAC groups that meet in Singapore on 2 and 3 March.

Changing Coordinator Details on IBIS

We would reiterate that for changes of personnel, school coordinators are responsible and must update names/email addresses of principals and coordinators in IBIS.  We appreciate being informed at the Regional Office but the actual changes in the system should be made by the Coordinator.

For security reasons, before IBIS/IBNET in Cardiff is able to amend the details to show that you are the new coordinator and to issue an IBNET account, we will require a signed fax from the principal of the school confirming the details of the change of coordinator.

The fax should provide information of the new coordinator and also the coordinator's email address. On receipt of this, Cardiff will arrange for your databases to be updated and will create an IBNET account for you, the details of which will be sent by email. Please mark the fax for attention by Andrew Skillern and send to +44 2920 54 7778.

Our best wishes to you all.
