Diploma Programme

Workshop Leader Training 2007

The regional office intends to offer training for prospective workshop leaders again next year. The tentative dates for the training are 6 - 8 September 2007. Applications will be asked for in the new year and at this stage coordinators are requested not to send in applications. However, we would certainly ask that staff at schools are alerted to the proposed dates.

General regulations: Diploma Programme

Several schools have contacted us recently regarding the request from IB for schools to ensure that parents have read and accepted the ‘General regulations: Diploma Programme’. This request was confirmation of Article 5.6 of the Rules for Authorized Schools in the Vade Mecum (page A2). One problem seems to have been with the phrase “using a standard form”, which was seen to imply that such a form might exist within the Vade Mecum or elsewhere. However, it is the school’s responsibility to produce, disseminate and collect such a form and the regional office wishes to reinforce the need for all schools to take note of the request from IB and to understand that the main purpose of the form is to provide legal protection to schools in the event of any dispute.

Schools intending to offer the Diploma Programme

All schools that have recently submitted a Notice of Intent to the regional office are reminded that their Application Part A must reach the office no later than 15 months before the anticipated start for teaching the Diploma. It is imperative that schools adhere to this deadline.

CAS Coordinators and release time

It is clear from discussions at recent CAS workshops in this region that there is considerable variation between schools regarding the amount of release time given to CAS coordinators.

Clearly there can be no blanket rule to cover all schools, as each is faced with its own challenges when establishing and running an effective CAS programme. However, it is equally clear that an effective CAS programme requires considerable time and effort whatever the circumstances of the school. CAS sits at the centre of the DP hexagon for very obvious reasons, and its centrality should be endorsed and valued by the resources given to it.

Some schools operate with a CAS ‘team’, with homeroom teachers, or their equivalent, acting as mentors in terms of student involvement in and reflection on their CAS activities. Others leave most of the mentoring and monitoring to the CAS coordinator. Some schools have 20 or less students involved in the programme, others in excess of 500. Thus the way CAS is managed will vary considerably from school to school. But the bottom line is that the CAS coordinator must be given sufficient release time to ensure the quality of the programme. CAS workshops are one way for coordinators to share their school’s experience and practices and to work out ways to manage the programme. I am also happy to respond to any particular queries in this regard.

As a result of continued growth and development the IB is seeking to make the following senior examining appointments. Applications are sought particularly from university academics. However, applications from experienced teachers of the IB Diploma Programme are also welcomed for all posts other than chief examiners. The appointments will take effect from September 2007 and, for most positions, will be expected to last five years. Please see attached details. [73 kb, PDF]
