University Perceptions Study
The Australian Council of Educational Research (ACER) has just commenced a research study about ‘University Perceptions of the IB Diploma” which will involve analyzing surveys from over 600 senior personnel from over fifty Tertiary Institutions in Australasia. After the surveys are returned in December, a number of the respondents will participate in follow-up interviews and the Report will be released by the end of March 2007.
The information from the Perceptions Study will be important in assessing how the IB Diploma is viewed in Universities and what the IB may have to do to address any lack of understanding or appreciation of the programme.
Reflections across the Diploma - a student conference
On 15 February 2007, the New South Wales/Australian Capital Territory (NSW/ACT) IB World Schools Student Conference will be held in Sydney, Australia at the Sydney Town Hall. The theme is ‘The International Baccalaureate and You – reflections across the Diploma’. This follows closely the current approach through the Learner Profile supporting the importance of reflection. With the support of local universities, students from authorised and interested IB schools will discuss three focus issues: New knowledge, New ways of learning, New connections. These focus issues will reinforce the Conference aims:
- to explore the IB experience through the philosophy and rigor of the Diploma
- to identify good practice including original approaches to CAS; personal management of the demands of the Diploma and the exploration of innovative solutions to the IB challenges
- for students to support students
Students will be supported in their discussions by invited guest speakers including past IB students who have used their IB experience, particularly their Extended Essay, as they have progressed through university and beyond.
It is anticipated that a major outcome of the Conference will be recognising the potential for inter-school collaboration focussing on CAS and/or the Group 4 project.
If you would like more information about the Conference or will be in Sydney in February 2007 and would like to attend or contribute or would like to be informed of the outcome, please contact the Chair of the Organising Committee, Julie Wilson at jwilson@redlands.nsw.edu.au The Conference is an initiative of the NSW/ACT IB Coordinators’ Group. This group of coordinators across all three programmes meets once per term and provides, amongst other things, subject specific support days for IB teachers and students. The NSW/ACT IB Conference will be for 2006 cohorts.
