Mention the words ‘creativity’ and ‘education’ to any expert in the field – as we have done while preparing this issue – and they will undoubtedly offer unprompted praise of the way the IB programmes encourage students to think differently.

Which begs the question: why worry about creativity? The IB already produces well-rounded students ready to meet the challenges of a changing world. But as the IB programme heads make clear on page 17, creativity cannot be centrally planned. It must evolve organically, and in no other area of curriculum is shared practice more important – which is why we have provided a snapshot (page 14) of schools’ approaches to the subject.

For one IB graduate, considering creativity may provide comfort as well as inspiration. Ken Jennings, a champion on the US gameshow Jeopardy!, was recently beaten at his own game by an IBM supercomputer in a televized showdown. Watson, as the conquering PC was dubbed, may understand facts and context, but it will be some time before it can create for itself. As Ken may like to reflect, creativity is what elevates us above the machines…
