External Adviser to the IB Publications Group


The IB is seeking to appoint an External Adviser with experience in educational publishing in the US to advise the publications group in relation to the planning and implementation of business and publishing opportunities. The application deadline is September 15, 2006.


The IB

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a non-profit educational foundation registered in Geneva, Switzerland. It offers the Diploma Programme for students in the final two years of secondary school, the Middle Years Programme for students in the 11 to 16 age range, and the Primary Years Programme for children aged 3 to 12. There are currently over 1,867 authorized schools in more than 124 countries. Each of these programmes is offered in English, French and Spanish (plus Chinese for the Middle Years Programme). The IB’s Publications Group

The IB’s publications group is an independent for-profit company within the IB. It plans for and provides publishing services to the IB for specified fee-covered and promotional materials, and develops, publishes and sells supplementary commercial resources through a small-scale commercial publishing operation.

 

The Role of External Adviser (US)


The IB is seeking to appoint an External Adviser with experience of educational publishing in the US to give advice and make recommendations to the publications group in relation to the planning and implementation of business and publishing opportunities. The appointment is for three years with a possible extension for a maximum of three additional years. Economy travel and other expenses will be reimbursed and an annual honorarium of £400 will be paid.

Responsibilities of External Adviser (US) to the publications group include providing advice on and recommendations for:

  • the content of the annual publications group business plan, in line with the IB’s business planning and budgeting process
  • issues that arise through the implementation of the current business plan
  • publishing proposals, to help guide and refine project specifications, particularly in the early stages of development
  • new commercial investment proposals, to help ensure these are in line with the business goals of the publications group, in particular the publishing plan, and of the IB
  • market research plans for publishing in key areas or for individual projects
  • any general publishing and business issues that arise in the course of the current business and publishing plans and in the planning of future business and publishing plans

The external adviser (US) will sit on the publications management committee. The committee will meet four times per year. The successful candidate is expected to attend two meetings in person and to be present at a further two meetings by telephone conference.

[Please note that the first meeting of the publications management committee is scheduled for Thursday, October 19, 2006 at the IB’s offices in Cardiff, Wales.]

 

Profile for This Appointment

The person we are seeking should:

  • be a current or former publishing/business professional
  • have experience of educational/commercial publishing in the US
  • have a sufficient level of English to participate in meetings
  • have an interest (but not necessarily experience) in international education
  • be prepared to devote the time required to prepare for and attend meetings
  • be able to advise about publishing planning and opportunities for the IB during a period of rapid growth and change
