Regional Director, IB North America and the Caribbean
The IB created IB North America in 1975 to serve as the regional office for North America in the form of an independent legal entity. There are more than 1,014 schools in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean offering one or more of the IB’s academic programmes. Presently, the organization is experiencing significant growth worldwide. The IB North America regional office is currently located in New York, with a sub regional office in Vancouver. These offices provide a wide range of services to IB World Schools and to prospective schools that are interested in IB programmes. In addition, IB North America provides a full array of professional development opportunities for teachers and administrators throughout the year.
The Position
The Regional Director, IB North America reports to the Board of Directors of IB North America and the Director General of the IB in a matrix management arrangement. He /she serves as the chief executive of the region and manages the working relationships with stakeholders to ensure that the services provided by the region are consistent with the IB and IB North America strategic plans.
The Regional Director oversees the efficient functioning of all regional services in support of the three IB programmes (Diploma Programme, Middle Years Programme, Primary Years Programme) and in line with the IB’s mission statement and strategic plan. He/she fulfils corporate responsibility as part of the director leadership team. However the jobholder also provides leadership and manages a team of over 40 staff, who work throughout the region recruiting and evaluating prospective and authorized schools, organizing teacher training workshops, and promoting support for and recognition of the three IB programmes. These staff members have expertise in the three IB programmes, and in the organization of workshops and conferences. The Regional Director is responsible for a budget of nearly $11 million (2007).
The regional office is the direct link between the IB and interested schools, authorized schools, and between the various ministries of education; it is the IB’s front office for North America and has much direct contact with teachers and school administrators through visits, work with the 22 sub-regional associations in the region, and workshops/conferences which it holds each year.

Key Accountabilities
The main accountabilities of the position are summarized as follows:
- Lead, manage, retain, develop and recruit regional staff so as to ensure that the activities undertaken by IB North America are proactive and in line with the strategic plan.
- Lead efforts to assure the organization’s responsiveness in a period of significant growth.
- Take an active part in the director leadership team so as to ensure that IB-wide decisions are agreed to and implemented as necessary across the organization.
- Manage the authorization and evaluation of DP, MYP and PYP schools in North America so as to ensure that the IB continues to grow in a planned way and maintains high quality standards.
- Oversee and participate in activities to enhance the recognition of the IB diploma in colleges and universities.
- Promote all three programmes with the US Department of Education and Canadian and Caribbean ministries of education, schools, professional associations, and the general public.
- Manage the annual schedule of introductory and training workshops (for teachers and trainers), and regional conferences for prospective and authorized schools so as to ensure that the appropriate level of training is available.
- Monitor CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) programmes and manage the unannounced visits to Diploma schools during exam sessions so as to ensure the continuation of our high quality.
- Provide guidance and direction to the IB North America Board of Directors in carrying out its responsibilities and serve as a non-voting, ex-officio member of the IB North America Board of Directors and ensure proper governance measures are managed.
- Prepare and manage the regional office budget in a way that ensures the strategies of the region and the IB can be met.
- Seek out and implement projects that can extend the impact of the pedagogy of IB programmes in national systems.
- Manage risks to the IB that are the responsibility of the regional director. Minimize those risks and the impact they have on the region and the IB in general.
- Act as media spokesperson for the region in line with media policy thereby ensuring that the reputation of the IB remains high.
- Manage the internal audit process for the region; ensuring recommendations relating to IB North America are implemented in a timely fashion.
Key Competencies of the Ideal Candidate
- Minimum graduate degree in education, administration, or some other appropriate field
- Excellent communicator with a high level of spoken and written competence in at least two languages is preferred, one of which must be English.
- Significant experience working with diverse cultures to achieve successful outcomes
- A proven commitment to international mindedness
- A proven high level of leadership, organizational, management and inter-personal skills
- Proven ability to communicate orally and in writing as well as make presentations to audiences of various sizes.

- Experience in or understanding of marketing.

- An understanding/familiarity of the IB Educational Programmes is preferred.
Location
The position is currently located in New York, NY. The IB is undergoing a global review of its governance, operations and management structures to better meet its growth needs so the scope of the role and potentially its location and reporting arrangements may change as a result of this review, which is expected to be completed in early 2008. The ideal candidate will need to be flexible and adaptable to these potential changes.
Compensation
A competitive (local) compensation package will be offered.
