Everyone privileged enough to work with email, internet access and the tools and networks that come with them will, at some point, have asked themselves: “How did I used to manage?”
It seems inconceivable that solving a query once involved a visit to the library, or that sharing information with someone on the other side of the world meant relying on the postal service.
New technology has irrevocably altered the way we work and play, and education systems have gradually begun to embrace the possibilities. A number of IB World Schools – where collaboration and inquiry are already a way of life – have embraced podcasting and other techniques that tap into students’ fluency in digital communication and love of discovery. But there is more to do to ensure the digital playing field is a truly level one, as Michael Furdyk explains.
Of course, words cannot tell the full story. Some of the featured schools’ work can be sampled first hand through podcasts and vodcasts, offering further inspiration for teachers ready to switch on.
