Category 3 NEW Workshops
There is no need for stand alone science classes! This workshop will look at the power and place of science knowledge and skills in all of the transdisciplinary themes. Using the key concepts and related concepts, participants will frame central ideas that allow for deep inquiry into relevant, challenging and engaging science. The workshop will also explore the connection between science research and inquiry cycles, a postmodern approach to writing scientifically and science in children’s literature. A half day laboratory session is structured into this workshop to de-mystify science labs and science equipment.
This workshop would enhance educators’ understanding of research based, best practice for young children. The curriculum needs to place appropriate demands on children according to age and stage of development. This seminar would support participants’ exploration of developmentally appropriate practice for young children and the implications for teaching and learning of the youngest students in PYP schools. Considering play as the primary tool for learning for young children is a new concept for many educators, especially in Asia. The Level 2 Workshop, 3-5 Year olds in the PYP makes connections to all of the elements and the learner profile. This workshop explores learning through play and the pedagogical implications of this approach to a deeper level. The workshop will also include sessions in an early years center.
Sustainability depends on thinking, questioning and reflective citizens. This workshop move beyond definitions and discussion of issues of to look at sustainability as a conceptual understanding. It will present a model to use for developing central ideas, lines of inquiry and scaffolding students’ inquiries to demonstrate that sustainability can be addressed in any unit of inquiry. Participants will also explore the relationship between sustainability, the learning environment, attitudes, action and the learner profile. They will develop insights and ideas for action research that prepare an action plan to enhance their schools’ involvement in the ‘Decade for sustainability’.
Inquiry is the pedagogy that underpins all programmes in the IB. This workshop looks at how the PYP framework provides opportunities for all learners to engage in relevant and significant inquiries through the transdisciplinary themes and in single subject classes. Participants will critique a range of inquiry models emphasizing that inquiry is an ongoing process that leads to reflection, new inquiries and deep understanding. Inquiry is true differentiation, supporting the personal construction of meaning and meaningful action regardless of language competency or learning style.
