Curriculum Subject Area Manager, Physics Ref 503H

Salary: 46,000 - 57,000 Euros per year dependent upon experience

Closing date: 27 April 2010

The role will be in the Diploma Programme curriculum department as a curriculum subject area manager in group 4 (experimental sciences) to support the development and management of the physics curriculum and possibly other group 4 & 5 subjects. However, the post has the potential to be an exciting, ground breaking one working both for the Diploma Programme curriculum department and, should the candidate have the experience and background within the IB Middle Years Programme, to facilitate the implementation of a successful transition from one programme to the other.

The Diploma Programme is designed as an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students, normally aged 16 to 19, for success at university and life beyond. The programme is normally taught over two years. IB Diploma Programme students study six courses at higher level or standard level chosen from each of groups 1 to 5 to provide breadth of experience in languages, social studies, the experimental sciences and mathematics. The sixth subject may be an arts subject chosen from group 6, or the student may choose another subject from groups 1 to 5.

The IB Middle Years Programme, for students aged 11 to 16, provides a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, and become critical and reflective thinkers. The programme consists of eight subject groups integrated through five areas of interaction that provide a framework for learning within and across the subjects. Students are required to study their mother tongue, a second language, humanities, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical education and technology. Assessment is criterion-related, so students around the world are measured against pre-specified criteria for each subject group.

Curriculum subject area managers are responsible for leading and managing curriculum research, review and development for a number of subjects, producing the course guides, teacher support material and professional development materials for teachers. They will display meticulous attention to detail, have excellent organizational and communication skills, and hands-on experience of managing teams.

The post holder will work alongside the DP assessment team and closely with other departments within the IB, and also with external educators such as teams of teachers, examiners, consultants and others.

If the candidate has the desired profile we are considering the role also in the Middle Years Programme as a curriculum and assessment manager for mathematics, responsible for the MYP mathematics curriculum and managing the development and implementation of assessment practices in this area.

Requirements:

  • A qualification at degree level in physics with experience of teaching mathematics
  • Significant experience in teaching at an upper secondary level preferably within an IB school
  • Experience in curriculum design and development and/or educational research
  • An understanding of current developments and trends in education
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills
  • Excellent communication skills in English and the ability to communicate in Spanish or other languages is desirable.
  • Accuracy and meticulous attention to detail
  • An ability to work in teams with internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience of using relevant IT packages including the ability to use a variety of desktop applications
