Arabic Translation Manager Ref 323C

3 year fixed-term contract

Salary c. £30,000 per year, depending on experience

Closing date: 8 December 2008

Interviews are likely to be held in the second half of January 2009

This post has been created as part of the IB-King Faisal (KFF) Project. The goal of the IB-KFF Teacher Training Project is to “increase the number of students benefiting from a high-quality international education experience in Saudi Arabia and the Arabic-speaking World.” The project represents an extraordinary opportunity to make a positive impact on education in Saudi Arabia and the region.

Initially, the project aims to provide elementary and middle school teachers at the King Faisal School in Riyadh with the skills and knowledge they need to enter into the Primary Years Programme and Middle Years Programme authorization process. In the long-term, however, the IB-KFF Project aims to develop a bank of new professional development materials for foundation teacher training, with the intention of creating a self-sustaining teacher training programme for the Arabic-speaking world. Some of those materials will need to be translated into Arabic, together with the full suite of PYP and MYP materials and other IB documentation.

The job holder will need to recruit a team of mainly external Arabic translators that can work on the Arabic versions of those materials to meet IB standards, and will also be directly involved in the revision of translations and the creation of glossaries and IB Arabic house styles. The job holder will advise the head of language services on any relevant Arabic linguistic and sociolinguistic issues.

The job holder will be part of the language services team and will also be in close contact with the IB access office, with the IB-KFF project manager and with IB trainers working on this project in Riyadh. Some travel to the Middle East might be needed. S/he will also work closely with IB academic staff and IB publishing staff.

Arabic is a new language for the IB, and this post involves advising on the setting up of all necessary systems and procedures so the organization can start translating into Arabic.

Essential requirement for the post are:
• University graduate, qualified translator (preferably a postgraduate qualification)
• Substantial experience as a translator/reviser, at least some of it in a company or organization
• Proven translation, editing and revising skills
• Proven experience in project and team management
• Excellent organizational and communication skills
• Able to motivate and manage a team of translators
• Able to set and meet deadlines under pressure
• Able to relate to other departments in the organization to coordinate projects
• Excellent command of the Arabic language, to the level of an educated native speaker
• Excellent knowledge of English
• Aware of cultural and linguistic variations

Familiarity with production processes for both print and online publications and some background in education would be beneficial. Good knowledge of other languages, (preferably IB languages) will also be an advantage

Location:

The post will be based in Cardiff, Wales UK
