Peterson symposium 2010

Cardiff 2010 will play host to the first IB Peterson Symposium, the theme of which will be the impact of emerging technologies on teaching and learning.

Peterson Symposium

The transition from Peterson Lecture to Peterson Symposium has been introduced to propel the profile of the lecture and encourage an interactive setting for the wider IB community.

The Peterson lectures were inaugurated in 1989 to commemorate the commitment of Alec Peterson to the International Baccalaureate (IB) as its first director general from 1966–77 and now, as the IB strives to sustain academic excellence on a global level, a symposium provides the perfect setting to do this.

Chief academic officer, Judith Fabian, says

“as the first of its kind, the new symposium format offers huge potential.  We are very excited by the prospect of interaction amongst IB educators’ A symposium will provide a platform for critical thinking and reflection. .  To open up an event of this nature and bring such an opportunity to the IB can only be a positive step for the whole community.  The choice of theme has been carefully considered; to encourage discussion and reflection around the idea of emerging technologies and their impact on teaching, learning and the development of curriculum is very fitting for the IB today and the IB of tomorrow.”

Speakers will include Christopher Dede, Timothy E. Wirth Professor in Learning Technologies, at Harvard University.  Chris Dede's fundamental interest is the expanded human capabilities for knowledge creation, sharing, and mastery that emerging technologies enable. His teaching models the use of information technology to distribute and orchestrate learning across space, time, and multiple interactive media. His research spans emerging technologies for learning, infusing technology into large-scale educational improvement initiatives, policy formulation and analysis, and leadership in educational innovation.

There will be live updates on Twitter and videos of the talk will be posted on ibTV.

Attendance to the event is by invitation but you can take part in the discussion on the impact of technologies on teaching and learning through the IB Peterson Symposium blog.

The blog, moderated by IB staff, will provide updates on future events relating to the Peterson Symposium, as well as provide a stimulus for discussion in your own working community and in the virtual community.

The Peterson symposium April 2010 marks a watershed in the history of the IB.  The symposiums will rotate every two years, therefore not only raising their profile but also raising the profile of the newly created IB global centres, The Hague, Maryland and Singapore as the host cities.
