Half a million students across the world

Almost forty years ago a group of talented teachers from international schools around the world got together to create a curriculum and a diploma that would facilitate the international mobility of students preparing for university. What started as a single programme grew into three programmes for students aged 3 to 19. Today we can celebrate the fact that half a million students from state or private schools in over 120 countries now experience IB programmes.

The founders of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme never imagined that their aspiration of educating future world leaders, who might understand that “others, with their differences, can also be right”, would transform into a continuum of international education now reaching half a million students of such a diversity of backgrounds, cultures, languages, ideas and aims in life. Even more remarkably, the organization has never promoted itself to achieve this growth—it is IB World Schools that have made it possible to show that high quality education, experienced by many more students, really does have the potential to create a more peaceful world.
