Examiners and the IB Community – ensuring quality
The International Baccalaureate (IB) has over 5,000 examiners in over 200 countries.
IB examiners are experienced and well-qualified educational practitioners who play an important role in maintaining the quality of assessment for which the IB is known worldwide.
The IB places strong emphasis on the support and training of its examiners through the provision of
- Mentored examiner training (in larger entry subjects)
- Standardization
- Detailed markschemes and assessment criteria
Examiners receive material for marking in March, April or May (dates are component dependant)
- Theory of Knowledge essays, Extended Essays and World Literature Assignments
- March 15th
- Internal Assessment
- April 20th
- Examination Scripts
- Within a few days of the examination in May
Examiners then have 28 days in which to send a sample of marked or moderated material to their team leader, complete a report on the performance of students in their allocation and submit marks electronically to the IB. Examiners are supported by IB staff throughout this process and can contact team leaders for advice on marking.
